VAGINAL BIRTH AFTER PREVIOUS CESAREAN DELIVER

If you have had a previous cesarean delivery you have 2 choices on how to give birth again:

1. You can have a scheduled cesarion delivery.

2. You can give birth vaginally. This is called vaginal birth after cesarean delivery, or VBAC.

A trial of labor after cesarean delivery (TOLAC) is the attempt to have a vaginal birth after previously having a cesarean delivery.

Benefits of TOLAC include:

• No abdominal surgery
• Shorter recovery period
• Lower risk of infection
• Less blood loss

If you are looking to have more children, VBAC may help to avoid complications linked to having multiple cecarean deliveries such as hysterectomy and problems with the placenta.

A common risk of TOLAC is the possible rupture of cesarean scar on the uterus or the uterus itself.

When deciding whether to have a TOLAC, you should consider these factors:

• Whether you want more children and future deliveries - multiple cesarean deliveries are associated with additional potential risks
• If you have any health complications
• The hospital where the birth will take place - the type of hospital you choose should be prepared and have the equipment needed to handle any emergencies that may arise
• Prior uterine ruptures - TOLAC is not adviced if you have had this problem in the past
• Any pregnancy problems or medical conditions you have that may make vaginal delivery risky
